“RABINDRANATH TAGORE, INDIA’S POET AND PROPHET, IN THE CAPITAL CITY”

All over India, especially in Bengal, Tagore’s lyrics are sung in chorus by the Indian people, just like the millenium old Upanishads – the sacred inspirational fountain of their thinking and feeling.
Tagore uses their perfect rhythm – similar to that of the Vedic hymns, gayatri, symbols of divinity – to teach the 300 million Indians.
Their hearts throb with the rhythm of perfection which uplifts man to Divinity.
In Tagore’s conception, art is the power which elevates human beings.
In his view, the world is the sight of the divine joy in which the lonely being can find happiness only when he has let his soul be pervaded by the universal rhythm of spirituality. Wherever he travels, in his country or around the world, the poet preaches his faith in the harmonious unification of the West’s active spirit with the East’s contemplative one. It is in the proximity and oneness of our being and the universal being, in the abiding interpenetration of the mystical soul of the ancient world and the constructive, materialistic force of the new world that the great Tagore sees redemption.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action---
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake....
